    Hola

    Air Platforms
FIDAE 2018: Chilean Navy to upgrade PC-7s
Jose Higuera, Santiago - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
    06 April 2018

The Chilean Navy is set to put some of its Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainers through a service life extension program (SLEP) with upgrades aimed at keeping those aircraft operational well into the 2030s, senior military sources told Jane’s .

After studying replacement options that included the possibility of acquiring new training aircraft, a decision was made in favour of extending the service of the PC-7s due to cost effectiveness, sources said at the FIDAE air show.

Chile’s Air Naval Command has used the PC-7 since 1978, when it received aircraft ordered in late 1976. The type has proven satisfactory and seven aircraft remain serviceable after 40 years of operation.

The Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) has contracted VSE Aviation’s (VAI) subsidiary Prime Turbines to conduct the overhaul and upgrade of two PT6A-25 turboprop engines.

The turboprop engines are used by the Chilean Navy to power its fleet of Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer aircraft, which are primarily deployed for pilot training purposes.

VSE Aviation president and chief operating officer Paul Goffredi said: “We are grateful to the Chilean Navy for entrusting us with this work. These overhauls are the first of what we hope will be many more.”

Goffredi added: “We’d like to thank our appointed representative, NewCont Chile, with assisting us in winning this award and look forward to receiving the engines in the next few weeks.

PT6A-25 is the compact variant of the PT6A family of turboprop engines, which has been developed by Pratt and Whitney Canada (P&WC).

P&WC’s PT6 engines are most commonly used to power turboprop military training jets such as the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor aircraft.

The PT6A engines are used to address demanding, high-cycle / high-power applications in single and twin engine aircraft for missions and operations of all kinds, including corporate, skydiving and agriculture, cargo and amphibious missions.

Prime Turbines is an independent company based in Carrollton, Texas, US, which focuses on the maintenance, repair and upgrade of PT6A turboprop engines.

The company also possesses facilities in Mesa, Arizona, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
