The Cartier Watch, known as “The House of Cartier” was originally a jewelry boutique, which was founded in 1847 by Louis-Franois Cartier. It was not long before the fine craftsmanship of Louis Cartier became recognized for superior quality and the standard for excellence of Cartier Watches. About 50 years later, his three grandsons, Louis, Jacques and Pierre, were successfully managing Cartier boutiques in Paris, London and New York.

The Santos is recognized as the first true Cartier wristwatch, designed by Louis and named for Alberto Santos-Dumont, a dashing Brazilian aviator, which was introduced in 1904. Jeweled Cartier wristwatches soon followed after the original Santos in 1906. , Louis Cartier created and patented the deployment-folding clasp in 1910. In 1917 the famous Cartier Tank watch was introduced. The Allied Tank commanders who defend France during World War I influenced the design of the original Cartier Tank wristwatch.

The creation of the Cartier Pasha wristwatch was developed in 1933. The Cartier Pasha model was commissioned by the Pasha of Marrakech in order to design a watch suitable for swimming. The Cartier Pasha model is one of the earliest truly water-resistant designs.

The Cartier watch designers of today base their craftsmanship on the watch making elements developed by Louis Cartier.
