Development
CAAIS (Computer Assisted Action Information System) evolved in the early 1960s during development of ADAWS (qv). The
Royal Navy sought a smaller, more versatile Action Information Organisation (AIO) for all ships of frigate size and above. A
naval staff requirement was drawn up in 1967 which set a unit cost of #100,000 ($240,000 in 1967). Ferranti, (now
GEC-Marconi, Radar and Display Systems) developed a system using its FM 1600 family of computers to support the CA
1600 family of display systems which were derived from commercial Decca (later Racal-Decca) navigation system consoles.
