From the mid 1950s until the early 1980s, the country was divided into four Military Zones, covering respectively, the north-central region, the north-western coastal region, the southern region and the jungle region of the east. The Ist, IInd and IVth Zones were each garrisoned by a nominal Division, each of which consisted of only one Brigade and support units in peace-time, the IIIrd Zone containing three nominal Divisions. There were also both a Cavalry and a Special Forces Brigade outside the divisional structure. In the early 1980s the divisional organization was largely abandoned, only the three-brigade strong Ist TARQUI Infantry Division remaining in the IVth Military Zone. The Army then consisted of a total of five Infantry, one Armoured, one Special Forces and three Jungle Brigades. On August 13th, 1995 each Military Zone became an Army Division and an Artillery, an Army Aviation, an Engineer and a Logistic Support Brigade were formed. This arrangement remains in force.
The Brigades are not numbered consecutively and carry odd numbers in the series 1 to 27. The Ist SHYRIS Army Division consists essentially of the 11th Armoured Cavalry and 13th Infantry Brigades although the 9th Special Forces, 23rd Engineer and 25th Logistic Support Brigades (all of which are in effect army troops and are administrative rather than tactical formations) also fall nominally within its jurisdiction as do two reserve infantry brigades. The IInd LIBERTAD Army Division consists basically of the over-strength 5th Infantry Brigade plus an artillery group and a logistic support battalion and also has two reserve infantry brigades which would only come into existence on full mobilization. The IIIrd TARQUI Army Division is the most important with three Infantry Brigades (1st, 3rd and 7th) and the 27th Artillery Brigade, with again two reserve brigades. Finally the IVth AMAZONAS Army Division groups together the Ecuadorian Army’s three Jungle Brigades (17th, 19th and 21st).
It would appear that there are at least 25 Infantry Battalions (of which at least two are Mechanized, and 10 are Jungle units), 6 Groups (battalions) of Paratroop/Special Forces, the Presidential Guard mounted unit, 8 Mechanized Cavalry Groups, 3 Mechanized Reconnaissance Squadrons, 8 Artillery Groups (5 Mixed, 1 Medium, 1 S/P & 1 MRL), 3 Companies of Heavy Mortars, 1 A/A Artillery Group, 5 Aviation and 3 Engineer Battalions, plus 1 Signals Battalion, 1 Mixed Logistic Support Battalion, 1 Maintenance Battalion, 1 Supply Battalion, 1 Transport Battalion, 1 Medical Battalion, 1 Military Police Battalion and an Electronic Warfare Group. Each Infantry, Jungle and Armoured Brigade also has a Special Forces, an Engineer, a Signals and a Logistic Support Company whilst all other Brigades have at least a Signals and a Logistic Support Company. All units of battalion-size are named but not all have been fully identified as regards name and geographical location.

TRAINING:
Aspiring officers of the Ecuadorian Army pursue a four-year course at the ELOY ALFARO Military Academy at Quito which has an average enrolment of approximately 300. The Escuela Superior de Guerra, situated some 20 miles from Quito, imparts post-graduate training to field grade officers and its two-year course must be successfully completed to qualify for promotion to senior rank or for appointment to the General Staff. The Escuela de Perfeccionamiento, at Quito, offers specialist courses both for officers and time-expired conscripts who volunteer to remain in the Army as potential NCOs.

TRAINING:
Aspiring officers of the Ecuadorian Army pursue a four-year course at the ELOY ALFARO Military Academy at Quito which has an average enrolment of approximately 300. The Escuela Superior de Guerra, situated some 20 miles from Quito, imparts post-graduate training to field grade officers and its two-year course must be successfully completed to qualify for promotion to senior rank or for appointment to the General Staff. The Escuela de Perfeccionamiento, at Quito, offers specialist courses both for officers and time-expired conscripts who volunteer to remain in the Army as potential NCOs.
Conscripts receive their basic training in the units to which they are assigned but there are specialist Infantry, Armoured Cavalry, Artillery, Engineer and Signals Schools. Of these, the Armoured Cavalry School is at Riobamba, the Paratroop and Special Forces School is at Salinas, the Army Aviation School is at Guayaquil and the Jungle Warfare School is at Coca (Pto. Francisco de Orellana) in the Oriente.
